Community Agreement

Every great creative community is built on trust, generosity and mutual respect. Joy’s is a community-centred arts space — not a nightclub — where care for one another comes before everything else. Here’s the spirit we ask everyone to share.

Everyone is welcome here

Everyone deserves to feel safe and at home. We honour all identities, backgrounds, cultures, opinions and lived experiences, and we treat that difference as something to celebrate.

Listen with curiosity

We listen to understand, not to win. Healthy debate is warmly encouraged — personal attacks are not. Disagree with the idea, never the person.

Respect space & consent

Ask before photographing or filming anyone. Respect personal boundaries and physical space, and let people enjoy the room on their own terms.

Care for the space

Treat the venue as you would a dear friend’s home. Leave spaces tidy after use, and treat artists, volunteers and staff with genuine kindness.

Keep each other safe

Excessive intoxication, aggression, harassment, discrimination, bullying or intimidation have no place here. You’re responsible for any guests you bring, and confidential conversations stay confidential unless permission is given.

Lift each other up

Support emerging artists through encouragement rather than criticism. If conflict arises, we resolve it respectfully and privately where we can. Joy’s may ask someone to step away or pause their membership if behaviour repeatedly compromises the safety or wellbeing of others.
